Photo Review: Street Lamp

Another entry in my Photo Review series and this time I’m looking at the most popular photo on my old blog.

I don’t know what it is about this photo and post but over time, it has received the highest number of views and I got quite a lot of requests for people to use it in one way or another.

This was one of those London winter photos, when it’s dark, grey and cold outside. The times when I didn’t really feel like going out to take photos but forced myself so I could keep up my ‘One Day, One Photo’ blog.

I just grabbed my Panasonic GF1 with the 40mm f1.7 lens, set it on high contrast b&w JPG and went out for a walk around the neighborhood.

While, I do like the photo and the mood it gives, it’s certainly not what I would consider one of my best photos.
Still, it does get quite a bit of attention for some reason. Maybe it’s the title or people like the mood or simplicity of it.

The Ride: Tam Hai

This will be a regular series where I will post my thoughts and photos from the motorbike rides I’ve been on and will go on in the future.

The first post is my last ride from 2 weeks ago, it’s been a nice and fun ride with friends.

The ride started in Da Nang, we drove towards Hoi An and over the Cua Dai bridge to Tam Ky. It’s a pretty much straight road but offers some scenic views along the way.
Our first stop was the ‘Mother of Vietnam’ statue and museum.

After our first stop, we went to one of the old Cham towers in Tam Ky, unfortunately it was closed but we did get some photos from the road.

After a bit of a boring drive on the highway, we turned off to head towards the Tam Hai ferry but not before exploring a bit of an off-road section nearby.

Once we took the ferry across to Tam Hai, we’ve made our way to the furthest point to see the main sight on the island.

There were some other stops planned but after spending quite a bit of time on Tam Hai, we realised it got late so decided to head back towards Da Nang.

The way back started off with great light and a very nice double rainbow but soon turned into torrential rain, to top it off it also got dark.

Overall, it ended up being a great day out with friends.
The rain kind of spoiled a bit the ride back and the roads were mostly straight but Tam Hai is a nice island to visit nearby.

Photo Review: Left of Right?

I started this new blog, what feels like ages ago, and haven’t really updated it at all. There are plenty of excuses that I could come up with but the actual reason is that I just didn’t know how to get it started and kept pushing it back.

So, this is a first entry in my Photo Review series, where I revisit some old or some slightly newer photos and post my opinion.
You’re also more than welcome to post your opinion about my photos, I’m always happy to hear any opinions about my work (good and/or bad).

This is not one of my best photos but it’s one I took for a photo competition in the company I used to work at that time.
The theme was ‘Signs’ and, as usual, I went out during my lunch with my Ricoh GRD I camera to capture something about signs.

Being a fan of street photography, I didn’t want to simply take a photo of a sign without any people in since it seemed boring. I also try to include reflections in my photos whenever possible and so I ended up with a few photos similar to this one.
The main reason I chose this one is that there is quite a bit of action in it and the sign is not the most prominent thing in the photo. It also provides a good snapshot of a typical London street scene.

Looking back at it now, there are quite a few things I would do different in terms of composition and timing. There are some distracting elements in there and I didn’t capture the perfect moment. It is also a bit too busy overall, despite that being one of the things that made me choose this photo at the time.

While not perfect, it did win me the competition and in the end that’s what really matters.
